The long and short of it is: some hate Visions Of Gandhi, some love it. This is an album that has always polarized opinions, especially among first hour Jedi Mind Trick fans. Kno definitely is the key to CunninLynguists’ creative success, his work on the boards is all-around awesome, and with SouthernUnderground he delivers one of the best-produced albums of the year.Įven if SouthernUnderground was generally critically acclaimed it was commercially not nearly as successful as it should have been, making it one of 2003’s under-appreciated masterpieces. Other stand-outs include “Old School”, “Dying Nation,” “War,” and “Appreciation,” (about 9/11), and especially “Falling Down” – a creative musical masterpiece by Kno. SouthernUnderground may be best known for its single “Seasons” – which features Masta Ace – a classic cut that details that history of Hip Hop comparing different eras to seasons of a year. For SouthernUnderground the trio employed Mr. SouthernUnderground is the second album from CunninLynguists, the trio hailing from Lexington, Kentucky a nd Atlanta, Georgia – consisting of Deacon the Villain, Natti, and DJ/vocalist Kno. While it may require repeated listens to take hold, Champion Sound is full of a lot more winners than losers.2003 was the year of 50 Cent’s Get Rich Or Die Tryin’. All of which results in a very unique and strangely rewarding album. The beats are slapped together, whacked samples are abruptly dropped, and the lyrics are steps behind the beat and generally about nothing but b-boy posturing and other nonsense. He's not bad, just rougher around the edges, which lends to a disorienting listen in general. Where Madlib is a seasoned MC (look at Lootpack's Soundpieces or Quasimoto's The Unseen), Dilla is not. As one might expect, the production qualities of an album made by two of hip-hop's most celebrated producers is rich in texture, innovation, and solid momentum.
As each were situated in their home towns (Dilla in Detroit and Madlib in L.A.), they fleshed out Champion Sound, which will easily win the award for the Most Blunted Album of the Year these guys were smoking serious greens while working this one out. Jaylib became a quick reality, so the producers started sending each other beats to rap over. He was impressed enough to call up Stones Throw mastermind Peanut Butter Wolf directly to get the ball moving on a Madlib/J Dilla collaboration. It started with J Dilla (aka Jay Dee) hearing a mix that Madlib put together in the Bomb Shelter of Dilla's beats with Madlib rapping over them.
